Subic Bay Dive Sites and Maps - Subic, Manila, Anilao, Philippines

Join Diver's Network in Subic Bay - Our Padi IDC center is fronting the beautiful bay of Subic.

Originally developed as a naval base by Spanish colonizers way back in 1885, Subic Bay became the largest US naval facility in the Far East. In 1991, Subic Bay was transformed into a International Freeport economic and tourism zone.

Subic Bay boasts of interesting wreck dives. The bay hosts a formidable combination of wrecks like the 19th century Spanish gunboat San Quintin, Japanese luxury liner Oryoku Maru, and the USS New York. The average depth for the six wreck sites is 45 ft.

Complemented by a rainforest and a white sand beach, Subic Bay has tourism-support facilities that include a marina, yacht club, hotels, shopping arcades and food shops. It also boasts of an international airport.

The USS New York is a World War I vintage battle cruiser built in Philadelphia in 1891 and scuttled by the US Navy at the approach of the Japanese in 1941. Situated between Alava Pier and the northern end of the runway, the USS New York lies on its port side in 27 meters (85 feet) of water. This historic old war horse still has its cannons intact and is a perfect wreck for underwater photography.

ORYOKU MARU

Liner / "Hell Ship"
Type: Wreck

Length: 117 Meters

Depth: 27 Meters

Sunk: 1941

With a severely damaged steering gear the Oryoku Maru limped into Subic Bay. The next morning American planes had once again found the wounded Oryoku Maru and began the attacking approach, it wasn’t until the surviving American and allied prisoners raced across the decks wildly waving their arms, that the pilots recognized the white figures as Americans and sharply pulled out of the attack, rocking their wings in recognition and flew off.

The 1,350 surviving prisoners were then forced to strip off and swim ashore and locked in a fenced tennis court near the Spanish gate.

The next morning 3 fighters appeared over the now abandoned ship and scored 2 direct hits, after burning steadily for 2 hours she settled into the water approx 100 yards off Alava Pier.
